Flower Petals - Eating them!

Yes its possible, you can decorate numerous meals and desserts in a colourful way.

However, please be aware of a few general rules:

Unless you are absolutely sure you have picked the correct variety do not eat them! Flowers like any berriers or anything else growing, can be toxic or only edible after various preparations.

Even Flowers that are edible should be consumed in moderation. Given they are consumed infrequently there is less evidence of any issues arising out of their consumption.

Do not use flowers that have been sprayed by pesticides. Either grow your own or obtain organic flowers. (Also tell the supplier that you intend to eat them and obtain any necessary advice from them).

If you suffer from hayfever or have any food or pollen allergies then check with your doctor before consuming flowers to avoid allergic reactions. Perhaps a good idea would be to consume a "small" quantity initially just to be on the safe side.

Do not use flowers that are not fresh, aged or damaged. Flowers with obvious infestations should also be avoided. Wash all flowers as you would with garden vegtables.

Remove the centre of the flower where possible, this contains the reproductive organs and the main region where the pollen resides.

If you have small children then it may be unadvisiable to eat flowers, as it could lead to unwanted experimentation by that child with flowers that grow in the garden etc!
